The World of Ead
The Holy Order of the Knights of St. Igneus' Blessed Ashes, commonly referred to as The Ashen Order, is an ancient militaristic order of Knights active in the decades after The Pandemonium. Their chief goal was to battle the forces of Chaos and spread the teachings of Saint Igneus from the church of Bior.
Their last great leader was Septus Vardis, whose final resting place has been lost for centuries
The soldiers and holy warriors of the order were marked for their black helms over white tabards. According to stories, the black of the helms was from the ritually applied ashes. It was said that, on learning of the fate of Father Igneus, Primus Vardis, the leader of the knights made a pilgrimage to the site of Igneus' pyre. Once he came to the place where Igneus had died he wept and tore his hair. He smeared the ashes of Igneus' body over his own head, face and helm. His entire company followed suit. This became a kind of grim ritual. Whenever The Ashen Order found a member of the band of killers responsible for Igneus' death, they would question them information on the whereabouts of their co-conspirators. Once they had extracted all the information they could, they would burn the remains and reapply the ashes to their helms. In later years, this ritual became the basis for an official livery with the helm and shoulders of the tabard being painted black to evoke the grizzly beginnings of the order.
